Spitfire Audio has expanded its free LABS series with Foghorn, a new free epic-sounding dark virtual brass instrument for macOS and Windows.
Spitfire Audio is one of the best companies for realistic and high-end orchestral virtual instruments. Besides their big libraries packed with orchestra sounds, they also have the LABS series where they experiment with sound design. The nice thing about this series is that the virtual instruments are free of charge. You only need the free cross-platform app to play them.
ABS grew by one more instrument every month. For August, they have again captured a very unusual instrument and made it available for free.
Spitfire Audio LABS Foghorn
Foghorn is the latest LABS addition and is again a unique virtual instrument. This time the sound designers of Spitfire Audio sampled the Sumburgh Foghorn. It was originally built in 1905 to guide ships through the dangerous fog. It has gained a reputation for its uniquely terrifying sound. You can hear it in Robert Eggers’ Academy Award-nominated film ‘The Lighthouse’.
The developers sampled the sound and embedded the sources in their LABS engine. Like all other LABS instruments, it comes with a minimal set of control options, including the envelope (attack/release), reverb, delay, and two other parameters.
Spitfire Audio promises guttural low-end brass tones to otherworldly echoes created by caverns of rock. They also created a mechanical kit from the sounds of whirring machinery. Epic sounds are guaranteed here. Another fascinating instrument for the LABS series. The SA sound designers always manage to surprise users and also myself with every new release. Also, this time.
Spitfire Audio LABS Foghorn is available now as a free download. It runs in the free Spitfire Audio app as a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS and Windows.
