DivKid ‘s third Eurorack module RND STEP, a collaboration with SSF, is a clever 3-channel sample & hold that goes beyond classic S&H generators.

DivKid aka Ben Wilson is not only a well-known YouTube personality in the Eurorack scene but also a module developer. Well, not quite more a designer. He works with experienced Eurorack companies together who concert his clever ideas into products. RND STEP is the third module from DivKid after øchd and Mutes again not from the sample company.

This time, he partnered up with the US-based company Steady State Fate (SSF) and created a high-performance three-channel sample & hold module that includes 6 unique S&H circuits in just 4HP. RND STEP is not another basic S&H generator but one that is cleverly designed. Each channel is based on two internal analog pink noise generators, and two S&H circuits split across unipolar and bipolar outputs.

How It Works

The unipolar output always samples its own noise source for a stepped random voltage between 0-5V. The bipolar output by default samples it’s own noise source (for -5V to +5V stepped random). However, it is possible to override this connection with the sample input. This allows for sampling external audio or CV signals, and it can sample voltages anywhere between -10V and +10V with the sample input.

RND STEP can handle slow triggers rates and sustain a voltage for extended hold time with high precision but it can also go up to audio rate. This is especially helpful for nice destructive downsampling effects on sampled audio. Plus, you can use the internal noise then it will produce downsampled and clocked noise great for modulation, percussion, or sound FX.

Trigger input 1 will normalise across all 3 channels, meaning a single trigger can give 6 unique random voltages, of which 3 are bipolar and 3 are unipolar. The combination of both ensures you have the right voltages in the correct ranges for the sources you wish to modulate.

Features

  • 6 high performance analogue sample and hold circuits split across 3 channels- a mixture of both unipolar and bipolar outputs
  • Highly accurate sampling of external audio and CV sources
  • High hold times and low droop rate for holding sampled voltages
  • Trigger input normalisation from channel 1- 4HP wide

At first look, it looks like a sample & hold module that goes beyond classic S&H modules and opens up some new possibilities. Away from classic modulations, towards new fields of use: noise percussion, elements for new melodies… Perfect for advanced randomizations.

DivKid & Steady State Fate RND STEP is available now for £199.
