ValhallaDSP has updated its epic free reverb/delay plugin ValhallaSupermassive to version 2.0 with two new reverb modes: Aquarius and Pisces.

The epic ValhallaSupermassive free reverb/delay plugin by ValhallaDSP is two years old. In 2020, at a time when we were staying at home a lot, Sean Costello released one of the best free effect plugins any developer has ever made. No matter what signal you feed the Supermassive, it just sounds better and bigger afterward.

It didn’t stop there. Sean Costello, the founder of ValhallaDSP, has constantly updated the free plugin with new “supermassive” algorithms over the coming months. And this year the plugin is celebrating two years with another big free update.

Supermassive 2.0 update is here. It’s 100% free, yes, no hidden costs or limitations and it comes with two new reverb modes: Aquaris and Pisces.

According to ValhallaDSP Aquarius and Pisces are both modified feedback delay networks in an “EchoVerb”-style topology. Unlike other algorithms of the plugin, you can also use these new additions as a versatile delay. Simply by modifying the warp, feedback, and density parameters, you can achieve classic delays, delays with reverb mixed in, reverb with a strong pre-delay, or weird and wild echo sounds. That alone sounds very tempting, but it is even more in these algorithms.

Aquaris

The new Aquaris mode consists of 8 delays in the feedback delay network that can be compared with the previous Capricorn mode. Unlike this, Aquarius only gives you two delays in the output signal. One on the left and one on the right channel, both with the same delay length regardless of the WARP setting.

The result is a very audible echo/delay in the signal. With higher density settings, you can get more reverberant sounds while. Here the other delays in the feedback delay network have more of their outputs sent into the global feedback path. With lower WARP settings, the algorithm gives your more comb filtering sounds. And with 0% settings of the WARP and modulation depth and higher density, you can strange cancellations in the echo signal. This creates unique polyrhythms and panning effects.

Please listen to the demo, it sounds awesome again.

Pisces

Pisces is a denser version of the Aquaris mode or a modified Gemini mode with only two output delays (L/R). The higher the density amount, the more output of the other delays in the feedback delay network is mixed into the global feedback path. Pisces core has more delays than the Aquarius and thus it is capable to produce richer and lusher reverbs more quickly.

There is also a lovely demo for the Pisces mode.

Another fantastic free update for the ValhallaSupermassive. I think Sean Costello will have to come up with a new name for the plugin soon. It has so many bloody amazing algorithms, it should be called Epicmassive. Big thanks Sean for this update.

ValhallaDSP ValhallaSupermassive 2.0 is available now as a free download and runs as a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (Intel + M1) and Windows.
