Puremagnetik Antoka melts a bit-crusher, a foldover resampler & AM/FM crossfader into a musical, affordable sound design-focused VST/AU plugin.
I report about new plugin releases almost every day. Regardless of whether free, affordable, or expensive. Tools are available for every budget. Often a click or two more is enough to find the best one for your setup. When it comes to cheaper but very inspiring plugins, I like to mention Puremagnetik, the company that initially only made Ableton Live packs, but has also made smaller but great plugins for a few years now.
They recently got back with a new $9 plugin. This time, less ambient oriented but a tool that comes from the rough, aggressive corner.
Antoka is a multi-functional plugin that shreds any signal into many harmonic-rich bits. It’s a bit-crusher. foldover resampler, and AM/FM crossfader inspired by legendary guitar pedals. More precisely by pedals employ ring modulation, envelope following, and distortion. The plugin recreates these characteristics but it goes beyond that. It is capable of creating a wide range of sonic textures. Dial-up extreme bit crushing effects for complete destruction or trim some subtle AM overtones.
The plugin has a gain detection and envelope that follows the input signal. So it applies a bit-crushing envelope over a period of time for each new amplitude trigger what is nice. Plus, you get an LFO and an amp mod/frequency modulation crossfader that makes the overall sound more flexible to use.
At first glance, Antoka is an interesting sound design tool with which you can add harmonics and heat up every signal especially on synths and drums.
Puremagnetik Antoka is available now as a VST/AU plugin for macOS & Windows for $9 USD as part of the Spark subscription service. After one month Antoka will become back-cataloged for a la carte purchase at $20 USD.
