At virtual NAMM 2021, Roland Cloud showed a first look at the new Juno-60 Synthesizer emulation, which will soon be available as a plugin and plug-out for System-8.

Personally, I’m not a fan of subscription, clouds, etc. Even if I don’t like it, you have to recon Roland that they constantly update the Rold Cloud service with new sound generators and content. They didn’t break their promises. In a short time, the system became a real cornucopia for vintage and modern sounds.

Roland Cloud Juno-60
For the virtual NAMM, they showed an upcoming update for the RC that includes a new Synthesizer plugin. It’s an ACB-based emulation of the legendary Roland Juno-60 Synthesizer with some additional features. The Juno-60 was back in the days a quiet simple analog synth. Single oscillator (DCO), 24dB lowpass filter, non-resonant high-pass, two envelopes, single LFO, and the mighty chorus effect. The ACB emulation has all of this but also some good addition.
The plug-in/out version comes with modeled highpass filter types, the classic Juno-60, and the Juno-106 HPF with an additional bass boost. Then you have a condition functionality that emulates the aging process of the Juno-60. This means you can have a synth that is perfectly in tune or one that will have slight up to heavy de-tuning between the voices. The latter is the behavior we expect from a vintage analog synth. This little but nice addition brings more character and life to the emulation.
Roland does not limit the emulation to the two chorus effects. They also added three effect channels including delay, reverb, and more. Skip to minute 02:25 for a first look at the new Juno-60 emulation.
Plugin/PlugOut
Since the introduction of the Zen-Core engine and the new Jupiter-X / Xm series, the System-8 has faded into the background. It’s a shame because it’s a very fat sounding Synthesizer. However, Roland has not forgotten the users and has provided the Juno-60 with the PlugOut functionality. So you can use the plugin in the hardware without a computer. Buy once or rent, use it twice, as a plug-in and plug-out. Good move Roland.
