Vocal synthesizers are only a few available. PPG Phonem, one of the best, was bought by Plugin Alliance this year and disappeared from the plugin & iOS stage. Hope it comes back in 2021. Another unique instrument for singing timbres is the Jussi from Klevgrand. A Synthesizer plugin & iOS app that creates interesting, rich vocal timbres.
The same developers who brought Jussi to the market, have today released Pipa, another beautiful vocal synth for PC, Mac & iOS.
Klevgrand Pipa
Pipa is a singing vocal synth with a unique sound character. The inspiration comes from the expression and flexibility of the human voice but without the aim to cover all the aspects of an actual voice. The developers put the focus on an organic and musical sound where the user has control over the formats and dynamics seamlessly.
The synth engine is a fusion of wavetable and granular synthesis. Pipa doesn’t use ordinary samples but uses a large database of wavetables extracted from real vocal samples. This makes the plugin much more versatile and flexible to its sample-based instrument. Further, it gives the musicians the possibility to seamlessly morph the wavetables with proper phase alignment.
This enables Pipa to continuously make transitions between pitch, formats, and dynamics, which is very useful in a musical context. The strength of the synth is not to reproduce entire words but to mangle vowels and formants in a beautiful way. Perfect for lovely textures.
Pipa is a plugin for PC & Mac but also an AUv3 app for iPad. No universal support, too bad. Maybe in the future also for iPhone.
