Steinberg ‘s new Backbone plugin (VST/AU/AAX) lets you re-synthesize loops & one-shot samples into distinctive drum sounds
There are already some drum samplers on the market. With Backbone, Steinberg does not publish another classic sample playback instrument, but one with which you can get very deep into the sound design.
Backbone is a unique drum re-synthesizer that introduces new ways to design distinctive drum sounds (kicks, snares, cinematic impacts, hi-hats…).
The engine is based on 8 sample slots where you can load in your content. From here, Backbone transform samples into a synthesized version with the spectral domain, allowing users to manipulate samples with the freedom of a Synthesizer. Plus, it comes with an additional customizable spectral filter that provides maximum control in the sound design process.
The re-synthesis goes pretty deep and offers an audio decomposition tool. It allows users to separate sounds into their tonal and noise elements and adjust each of these with re-synthesis and classic subtractive synthesis. Cool is the addition of direct audio export for clip-based music production software.
Senior Marketing Manager Florian Haack says:
Backbone lets you create and manipulate drum sounds in unprecedented ways. You can feed the Drum Re-synthesizer with your own recordings and combine them with any kind of drum sample. It is such a powerful tool for those who like to get creative and want to develop their own signature drum sound. Personally, I have never had so much fun in crafting sounds as with Backbone.
