2. Bastl Instruments grandPA

A grandmother also needs a grandfather. This has also Bastl Instruments thought and released the grandPA that is actually a microGranny granular sampler for the Eurorack format. Same as the MG, the grandPA is based on the same microGranny 2 sound core. This means you can adjust for each sample: sample rate, crush, grain size, shift speed, attack, release (full release is hold), start and end position.

New and not in the standalone version is the complete integration of the engine into the Eurorack world. It has 2 trigger inputs to trigger 2 different samples, CV input assignable to any sound parameter and a signal output. The CV input can be also used to trigger grain shift.

For complete CV control over all parameters, there is also an grandPA add-on module available with the name SPA. It’s an extension for the grandPA and adds CV inputs for almost all parameters and a clock input to trigger the grain shifts. The sound character has not changed in the Eurorack module. If you like harsh and bit crushed sounds, then you’re in the right place. If you like more a clean and proper sound, you should look for another granular sampler or Synthesizer.

The GrandPA is for a price of 199€ an affordable Eurorack granular sampler with many options and a very own sound.

    • Yes! A pacarana or paca are still the most powerful granular synthesizers on this planet. And the symbolic sound implementation of granular synthesis sounds very good because of the technical background they have and how the algorithms are implemented on a real DSP plattform.
