BeagleBoom Is An Open-Source Eurorack Sampler That Can Play Sounds From The Net!

SYNTH ANATOMY uses affiliation & partner programs (big red buttons) to finance a part of the activity. If you use these, you support the website. Thanks!

BeagleBoom is a new Eurorack sampler that is affordable, open-source and has access to the freesound.org sound database!

The Eurorack interest has not only arrived in the commercial sector but also at universities. At the FH Kiel (University of Applied Sicences) in the creative technologies working group, three students developed the BeagleBoom, a new Eurorack sampler. The module is not a commercial product but a open-source project that is based on a Beaglebone single-board computer.

The project’s aim is to provide an easy to use sampler which has access to the freesound.org sound database. The module is powered by a modular architecture that can be changed by the user. Additional it comes with CV/gate connection with which samples can be triggered. The BeagleBoom is an interesting project that primarily gives young developers a good platform to develop an advanced sampler.

Overview

Beagle Boom is a Eurorack Sampler based on the Beaglebone single-board computer. It was build as part of a project for the Creative Technologies AG (CTAG) of the University of Applied Sciences Kiel. The project’s aim is to provide an easy to use sampler which has access to the freesound.org sound database.

The BeagleBoom consists of a shield for the Beaglebone and several programs handling sound generation, displaying graphics, reading cv, gate, button and rotary values. To meet the strict size limitations of eurorack modules (and for cheap PCBs) we devided the circuit board into two stacked ones. The lower one contains the power supply, adc + level shifter (for gate/cv). The upper shields holds the buttons, rotaries and the lcd, as well as the needed resistors and capacitators.

Features

  • Search, download, save and play any freesound sample
  • Use MIDI and CV / gate keyboards
  • Multiscreen System: In addition to the build in LCD display, any browser can be used as a second screen and keyboard input.
  • Modular architecture: every component communicates over a message queue and can be replaced if wished.
  • Browser based UI: The interface is browser based and can be styled by your liking.

The documentations for the BeagleBoom Eurorack sampler project is available now for free on GitHub.
