6. Audio Interface

To use and record other sound sources than the iPad, you need a portable small audio interface if possible. Here I recommend smaller device with less features which fit perfectly in your mobile setup. I prefer using audio interface that are compact and offers quality inputs and outputs. At the moment I use for my iOS setup, the Apogee Jam of the first generation that I bought some years ago at a very reasonable price in an Apple store. Typically, this product costs slightly more than the competition but offers better inputs. If you have a smaller budget, you can also buy a cheap audio interface which is also quite sufficient to work mobile. So that you do not buy the wrong, you should make attention of the designation Core Audio compatible  which indicates that it is compatible with iOS. According to my current knowledge almost all new portable audio interfaces are able to work with iOS. You’ll find my favourites here from very cheap to slightly more expensive.

Behringer U-Control UCA222 USB Audio Interface (cheap but good)

Focusrite Scarlett Solo (2G) (Everything you need for an affordable price)

Steinberg UR242 (More inputs, good sound quality for an acceptable price)

Apogee JAM 96K (1 input, 96k sound quality but expensive)

7. Headphones

Last but not least headphones.  If you like to hear and listen your music properly, you need as iPad musicians also good headphones. Since I leave you all alone the decision because every musician has a different preference. At the moment I have been using the Bose Quite Comfort 25 for over 6 months since they offer me excellent sound quality and enable me to make music through the noise canceling technology also on the train or plane. If you want to fly a lot or travel by train and want to make music, then I recommend absolutely noise canceling headphones. This technology is an absolute gift. Also better investing in better headphones than buying twice.

I hope I give you a good overview what you need to begin making music with your iPad. If you have all that already then I let you go on the Apple Appstore where a lot of interesting apps await you. Good luck and compose well.
