4. Use more USB devices with an USB hub
Because the Camera Connection Kit has only a classic USB port, you need a classic USB hub to connect multiple devices simultaneously (keyboard and audio interface per example). You must be careful here how extensively the device is and whether it is iOS compatible. Before using an audio interface with your iPad, check if it Core Audio compatible. If you want to be mobile and want to do music in nature per example, a USB hub with power is certainly the wrong one. Here I recommend a simple hub without extra current. If however would like to attach larger devices (keyboard with 88 keys or very large audio interface) then I recommend a hub with power. In short, if you want to use an audio-interface and keyboard at the same time, than a USB-hub is necessary.

5. Portable MIDI Controller
In order to be able to create music at all, do you need a real instrument with your iPad. No, the iPad has revolutionised making music, because it allows users to play virtual keys with finger touches. Well this way is not the best for every musician. In this case, you need a portable MIDI keyboard that is easy to connect via USB to your iPad setup. You can find from various manufacturers portable keyboards with a lot of features for little money. If you like the cordless way, there are also Bluetooth keyboards from KORG and AKAI Pro. These are somewhat more expensive, but do not need a cable.
At the moment I use the Arturia keyboards Minilab MK2 and Keystep for my iPad setup. Both controllers can be used without problems with the iPad. In my estimation, the selection depends on the controller of each person. One may prefer higher-quality keys other musicians more onboard features. Just below, you find a selection of various portable keyboard with and without cable.
